Yet, in Washington Brotherhood, Rachel Shelden paints a more nuanced portrait of Washington as a less fractious city with a vibrant social and cultural life. Traditional portrayals of politicians in antebellum Washington, D.C., describe a violent and divisive society, full of angry debates and violent duels, a microcosm of the building animosity throughout the country. ![]()

![]() ![]() There's a few exceptions to this, most notably the works that came about by a collaboration of Lovecraft and another author. That is not to say that it's all rubbish, merely that nothing much will stick because, compared to the power and imagination at play in the previous volume, most of the stories in here come across as run of the mill and don't leave much of an impression at the book's close. So then, where the best of Lovecraft's stories had already been included in Gollancz' earlier Necronomicon (Big Black Book edition) Eldritch Tales is mostly made up out of the dredges of his work. As anyone knows who has had some experience with plowing through short story collections, after a while everything will start to blur together. This'll be a short little write-up as there's not much to really talk about. I say demise because the short stories in Eldritch Tales weren't all that great and I frequently found myself irritated, baffled or just plain bored by some of them. ![]() And so, a book I thought wouldn't be finished for a while yet has already met with a swift demise. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There’s a quote I love, from the poet Mary Oliver, that goes: “I want to talk about creating your life. I liked the page with "use both sides of the paper" - well done illustrations and smart (sometimes overlooked) suggestion for kids!Īll in all it was a well-done book, aside from my project I would recommend it to all young kids (JK-Grade 2ish). I did not like the page where it said "Putting garbage away keeps the world safe and clean." This is kind of misleading, since throwing garbage in the garbage just allows it to go into a landfill somewhere else? It keeps your neighbourhood "clean and safe" maybe, but definitely not the world. This book is simple and geared towards a younger audience, and it's a very short read. More complex/effort-involved solutions could be used for age 7-9 children. The small actions kids can take to help the world listed here are a nice start for young children, maybe 3-6 year olds. Overall, the book was colourful and nicely illustrated with flaps - I didn't realize there would be flaps on every page. I was checking every day to see if it arrived! On the surface, it's a very simple story about a housekeeper who works for a brilliant mathematician who is pretty much helpless in all other areas of life, due to a severe brain injury which leaves him no more. The writing is spare, as one reviewer said, but that makes it accessible and sort of poetic. Review 2: I enjoyed this book I read it for my book group. I had a tear in my eye when I finished it, but it wasn't sadness. It is about true friendship and family, and how those don't have to be genetic. It is a book about memory and mathematics, but mostly about relationships. It is right up there with Kabloona and just a few other books that I would give five stars. This is one of the most touching books I have read in a long time. ![]() ![]() While you may have expectations for your portfolio and your long term plans, there will be times where you will have to make tradeoffs. ![]() It is important to remember that there is a lot of push and pull on this journey, and it is not meant to be perfect.
